My Favorite Movie - Message - The Day the Earth Stood Still

Many years ago my friends and I sat around and tried to decide what our most favorite movie in the whole world. While movies come and go....I fell in love with The Day the Earth Stood Still. As a child I saw it rerun on one of the science fiction channels. There are many wonderful movies, Star Wars, Star Trek, but only the even numbers...:) For me the meaning of this film and man's fate is summed up in the last few minutes of the film. So I am writing it here for you to read...because it is important as a message to mankind.

From Klaatu:

I am leaving soon, and you will forgive me if I speak bluntly. The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all, or no one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibly. Your ancestors knew this when they made laws to govern themselves and hired policemen to enforce them. We, of the other planets, have long accepted this principle. We have an organization for the mutual protection of all planets and for the complete elimination of aggression. The test of any such higher authority is, of course, the police force that supports it. For our policemen, we created a race of robots. Their function is to patrol the planets in spaceships like this one and preserve the peace. In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us. This power cannot be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor. The penalty for provoking their action is too terrible to risk. The result is, we live in peace, without arms or armies, secure in the knowledge that we are free from aggression and war. Free to pursue more... profitable enterprises. Now, we do not pretend to have achieved perfection, but we do have a system, and it works. I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you.

In German:

"Ich verlasse euch bald, vergebt mir wenn ich deutlich zu euch spreche. Das Universum wird mit jedem Tag kleiner und die Bedrohung einer Aggression durch irgendeine Gruppe, irgendwo, kann nicht laenger akzeptiert werden. Es muss Sicherheit fuer alle geben andernfalls kann niemand sicher sein. Nun bedeutet dies nicht die Freiheit aufzugeben, ausser die Freiheit unverantwortlich zu handeln. Eure Ahnen haben dies gewusst und haben Gesetze erteilt sich selbst zu verwalten und Polizei eingesetzt um deren Einhaltung zu unterstuetzen. Wir von den anderen Planeten haben dieses Prinzip seit langem akzeptiert. Wir haben eine Organisation fuer den gemeinsamen Schutz aller Planeten geschaffen und fuer die totale Beseitigung jeglicher Aggression. Der Test einer solch hohen Autoritaet ist natuerlich die Polizei die dies unterstuetzt. Wir haben fuer uns eine Rasse von Roboter Polizei kreiert. Deren Funktion ist die Planeten in ihren Raumfahrzeugen wie dieses, zu patrouillieren und den Frieden zu erhalten. In Dingen der Gewalt haben wir ihnen absolute Macht ueber uns gegeben. Diese Macht kann nicht rueckgaengig gemacht werden. Bei ersten Anzeichen von Gewalt, handeln diese automatisch gegen den Angreifer. Die Strafe diese zur Handlung herauszufordern ist zu gross um sie zu riskieren. Als Ergebnis leben wir in Frieden, ohne Waffen und Armeen, sicher in dem Bewusstsein, dass wir frei sind von Angriff und Krieg. Frei um nach mehr nuetzlicheren Unternehmungen zu streben. Ich bin gekommen um euch diese Fakten darzulegen. Es geht uns nichts an wie ihr euren eigenen Planeten verwaltet, aber wenn ihr damit droht eure Gewalt zu verbreiten, wird diese eure Erde zu verbranntem Zunder reduziert werden. Eure Wahl ist einfach: schliesst euch uns an und lebt in Frieden oder bleibt weiter bei euerem bisherigem Kurs und stellt euch eurer Vernichtung. Wir erwarten eure Antwort. Die Entscheidung liegt bei euch."
